Summary
Our client was charged with seven counts of making and distribution of indecent images of children (IIOC) to which he later pleaded guilty. Partner Dawn McKnight represented our client on a privately funded basis where she prepared strong mitigation ahead of our clients sentencing. Thanks to Dawn’s expertise, our client avoided immediate prison and instead received a two-year suspended sentence order.
Details of Case
In January 2025, Bedfordshire Police received intelligence that an indecent image of a child had been uploaded to the internet from a Discord account associated with an email address and telephone number linked to our client.
Surrey Police then arrested our client and seized our client’s devices in February 2025, which later revealed indecent images of children (IIOC) across categories A, B and C on two iPhones and a laptop.
After instructing Partner Dawn McKnight on a privately funded basis, our client later attended a voluntary interview at Kempston Police Station, where he made full admissions. With his case consisting of seven offences relating to possession of indecent images of children, including possession and distribution allegations.
Our Defence
Partner Dawn McKnight advised our client on plea, sentence and case preparation. She advised the client that a guilty plea at the first hearing can attract maximum credit and that full cooperation would be considered in sentencing, ensuring our client was fully prepared for court.
Dawn instructed counsel, Barrister Beth Crocker of 15NBS Chambers, to represent our client at court. She provided Beth with further material in support our clients case, which included supportive character references and a positive Pre-Sentence Report.
Dawn also recommended that our client engage in support courses, such as the Safer Lives programme and the Inform Plus programme run by the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, with both courses designed to help prevent future offending.
Outcome
Despite the early guilty plea, the case still carried the risk of immediate custody for our client, with the lead offence of Distribution Category A indecent images of children (IIOC) carrying a maximum sentence of five years and a starting point of a three-year custodial sentence.
Our client pleaded guilty in May 2026 at his first appearance before Luton Magistrates’ Court and later attended Luton Crown Court for his sentencing in June 2026. Beth argued that our client had shown genuine remorse and had taken steps towards rehabilitation, making an immediate prison sentence unnecessary.
He was sentenced to two years imprisonment, suspended for two years, alongside 30 Rehab Activity Requirements and 150 hours of unpaid work.
Our client was relieved with this outcome and grateful to Dawn and Beth for their skilled representation during such a trying time. Without Dawn’s expertise, our client may have faced a much more serious result, highlighting the value of the early instruction of specialists in sexual offences.
