Been asked to attend a voluntary interview?

The police may invite you to attend a voluntary interview at the police station. Your role will be to assist them with any enquiries they have into the suspected criminal offence. It is your responsibility to ensure that you arrive at the station promptly.

A voluntary interview is also referred to as a caution plus 3 interview. During a voluntary interview you are not under arrest, but you will be cautioned beforehand and warned that everything you say will be recorded for police purposes. Your testimony may be used in court.

It is important to seek expert legal support in order to protect your interests during a voluntary police interview. You could say something that seems incriminating by accident, or your statement could be misinterpreted by the police.

For this reason a voluntary police interview should be approached with the same degree of seriousness as an interview under police caution. You do, however, have the option of leaving the police station at any time should you choose to do so.

At Lawtons, we are highly experienced in client representation during the voluntary police interview process, regardless of what the alleged offence may be.

Not only will one of our specialist criminal defence solicitors support you throughout your voluntary interview, but we will also take care to arrange it at a time and date that best suits you.

In order to achieve the best possible outcome, make sure you seek advice from legal experts prior to your voluntary police interview.
