Paul Dillon, from the private crime team at Lawtons, recently secured a unanimous acquittal for our client at Lincoln Crown Court. The jury deliberated for less than an hour before reaching their verdict.
The case involved historical allegations of sexual abuse against our client, accused of offences against two women dating back to the mid-1990s. These allegations were not brought to light until many years after the alleged incidents. Our client first became aware of the accusations in 2019 and was formally interviewed under caution at Boston Police Station in 2022, accompanied by Mr Dillon.
In May 2023, the case was brought before Boston Magistrates’ Court, where it was allocated for trial at Lincoln Crown Court. Mr Dillon maintained continuity of representation throughout the proceedings. The allegations were extremely serious and, if convicted, our client faced a lengthy prison sentence.
Mr Dillon managed the case and instructed counsel from 15 New Bridge Street Chambers. The defence meticulously examined the prosecution’s evidence, delving into decades of relationships and events. In such cases, relationship divisions often complicate obtaining defence witness statements, requiring difficult decisions from various family and friends.
Both complainants made similar allegations and were aware of each other’s claims, which bolstered the prosecution’s case. Despite this, the matter proceeded to trial at Lincoln Crown Court, where our client was acquitted of all charges. Upon conclusion, the judge discharged our client, allowing him to leave the court as a free man.
Our client, a professional middle-aged man, faced the potential loss of his career and personal relationships if convicted. The acquittal brought immense relief to him.
